Putting ketchup on hot dogs for hungry Marines was one of the recent important jobs for staff at the new USO Camp Pendleton Center.
Staff from the center, which will officially open this summer, supported the Camp Pendleton ASYMCA’s weekly Concrete Beach event at School of Infantry - West.
Marines at the SOI-W, in Camp Pendleton’s north, are kept extremely busy with training after graduating from recruit depots and have little time or transport to get away.
USO Camp Pendleton Center Director, Ann Jarvis, said the Marines are on a tight schedule and the weekly visit from the ASYMCA was always welcome.
“We went out and sponsored one of these visits and we helped to feed about 300 Marines,” she said.
“Each week they can feed anywhere between 200 to 500 Marines and this week it was our job to put the condiments on the hot dogs provided by the ASYMCA.”
USO Camp Pendleton also took the Marines games of Giant Jenga and corn hole, which were a big hit.
“They loved it and they had so much fun,” Ms Jarvis said.
“Most of them don’t have cars and there is not much out there except for a chow hall.”
She said the USO sponsored the Wednesday event to help out the ASYMCA and get more information about how the USO can work with SOI-W.
